When it comes time to perk selections, pick perks least likely to help in any practical way. Second, it lowers your carrying capacity which, now already having to cope with weighted items, can carry fewer items than most. This is important for two reasons: first it hurts your weapon’s performance making ranged weapons inaccurate and takes away from your melee weapon damage, which helps counter the bonuses from raising the stats. Melee and unarmed can become powerful, but it takes a while, so those are good combat perks to invest in and on hardcore, will be more difficult to use due to the stimpak health regen over time.Ĭontroversially, I would actually say have your luck crazy high, just so you can lower your strength to 1. Do not level explosives, because grenades and especially the smaller grenade launchers have a decent weight to performance ratio. Speech next, which might be useful for some characters, but not a Legionnaire, since many locations will hate you on sight, and again, this does not aid your combat skills at all. After that Lockpicking, which is again highly situational, but offers no combat aid. Then Science, a situationally very useful perk, but one which offers no combat aid. Still not a great choice to raise significantly early in the game since there’s fewer affected weapons around at the time. Unless you have no qualms with breaking tradition, if so, only level this one partially. As a Legionnaire, you’ll have no need for energy weapons, so obviously get that one to 100 before improving any other skills. This will greatly limit the number of skill points you acquire, and place those points in reverse practical order.
Max out your Charisma, since it’s nearly worthless, and have your Intelligence set to 1. Unarmed takes much longer to be viable, so it’s an alright tag. You'll also need to fire up New Vegas through Steam or GOG the regular way once for xNVSE's loader to work.Take the Logan’s Loophole trait so that your level caps much earlier, and it will prevent you from gaining several perks and skill points. Your chosen skills to tag are too good, since melee and explosives can both aid you in combat, and are even thematically appropriate for the Legion. I recommend making a shortcut of this file and putting it on your desktop. NOTE: For xNVSE to take effect, you'll need to launch New Vegas with the nvse_loader.exe file that comes with this mod.

This mod extends the scripting capabilities of the vanilla game, which is necessary for making many popular mods work. Next up, you'll want the newest version of the New Vegas Script Extender, or xNVSE.

If desired, you can override LOOT's optimization to make manual tweaks to your load order yourself (this shouldn't be necessary for the mods in this list). This program automatically reorganizes your load order to make it as stable as possible. A great tool to pair with your mod manager is the Load Order Optimization Tool, or LOOT.

This will allow New Vegas to read and accept any texture mods you install (we'll get to those later). Then go to Settings > Workarounds > BSA Redirection and toggle it.
After installing it, log in, and select New Vegas as the game you're modding. I highly recommend Vortex since it has a great UI and is very easy to use. These tools automatically handle most mods' installation, so you don't have to dig around in-game files - simply drag-and-drop compressed mod files, and the mod manager will do the rest. The first thing you need is a Nexus Mods account, the website where most mods are posted.
